Sona Masuri is a light weight and aromatic medium grain grain which is the result of cross combination of the rice varieties Sona and Mahsuri. It is grown largely in the states Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka and used primarily in South Indian cuisines.

Processing of Sona Masuri Steam Rice

Primarily grown in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, Sona Masoori is a medium-grain white rice. It is also lightweight, low in starch and aromatic which makes it perfect for use in Indian and Chinese dishes. Sona Masoori can be used in sweet and savoury dishes alike, but is particularly popular in biryani, sweet pongal, fried rice and idli.
Since Sona Masoori contains less starch than Basmati rice, it is easier to digest and considered in Southern India to be the healthier choice. Sona masoori rice is acclaimed due to its excellent taste and fresh aroma. Owing to its light weight, less starch content makes it one of the most digestive rice grades which make it one of the most preferred rice in overseas market. This premium variety of Sona masoori rice is mainly exported to USA, Canada, Europe, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Middle East countries such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Qatar.

In the State of Andhra Pradesh, in native Telugu language, this variety rice is called as Bangaru Theegalu (meaning ‘Golden Ivy’).
